How to Take Care of Your Face After Fillers?
- Nov 22, 2022
Several sessions of fillers can take years off your appearance and give your skin a refreshed look. But for safe and effective results, there is some aftercare needed. For any skincare treatment, be it Morpheus8 skin tightening or Botox, aftercare is an important aspect. Here are some dos and don’ts after your facial filler session.
How do Dermal Fillers Work?
The fillers are injected into the skin of the patient to revitalize and add volume to the aging skin. The injectable components diminish the wrinkles and fine lines thus giving the patient a younger look.
The fillers are metabolized by the body to be excreted through the kidneys and liver. Some activities can interrupt this process and hence produce adverse effects. Knowing them and actively avoiding these activities will help the patient get effective results.

What Not to Do After Botox Treatment?
Botox treatment involves the injection of botulinum toxin into the muscles that are greatly responsible for wrinkles and fine lines. The neurotoxin helps relax these muscles hence reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and fine lines.
The neurotoxin is slowly absorbed by the muscles until it is fully metabolized by the body. Here are some things to avoid after getting a Botox treatment.
- Postpone Your Intense Workout Session
Heavy cardio exercises boost your endorphins but when done right after the treatment, they can also cause bruising and swelling of the skin.
It would be ideal for the patient to wait a whole day before starting cardio for the effects of the injections to kick in. Avoid exercises that will increase the heart rate for a long time.
- Avoid Lying Down
Botox is a targeted therapy for certain areas of the face. When the patient lies down right after the treatment, it can cause the neurotoxin to migrate and result in bruising.
Hence, avoid lying down for at least 4 hours after the treatment. Also, do not lie on one side of your face the night following your treatment.
- Say No to Blood Thinners
Blood thinners can increase your risk of bruising after the treatment. It would help to avoid blood-thinning foods for a week after the treatment.
Alcohol has blood-thinning properties. Avoid drinking alcohol one day before and after the treatment for best results.
- Exercise Caution While Applying Makeup
Botox injections leave tiny marks on the treated area and applying makeup right after the session might result in bacterial infection. Waiting for about 30-60 minutes after the Botox treatment allows these tiny pricks to heal after which you can apply the makeup safely.
Using facial tools like jade rollers can increase blood flow which in turn can cause swelling, bruising, or migration of the neurotoxin from the treated area.
Things to Avoid After Getting Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers act in the same way as Botox but they are injected deep into the skin where they rest until they are metabolized by the body. Dermal fillers are used to treat static wrinkles by increasing collagen production. Here are the things to avoid after dermal filler treatment.
- Be Aware of the Sources of Infection
Dermal fillers treatment tends to leave micro-holes which can serve as an entryway for bacteria. Hence, avoid any sources of infection for about 24 hours after the treatment after which the puncture holes are naturally sealed.
Avoid washing your face with unknown sources of water. Avoid swimming. Stick with gently wiping your face with facial wipes. Avoid wearing makeup till the puncture holes are healed fully.
- Avoid Pressure on the Treated Area
During the treatment, the hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the area to be treated. The gel is deformable in the initial stages. Though it is rare, too much pressure on the treated area right after the treatment can cause the gel to migrate.
Avoid getting facials, massages, or any treatments that apply pressure on the treated area. Repeatedly rubbing your face after the treatment can cause bruising and swelling. Avoid applying excessive pressure on your face while sleeping. Follow these precautions for about 7-10 days.
- Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen
Venturing out in the sun right after the treatment can cause irritation and hyperpigmentation of the skin. Avoid direct sunlight for at least a day after treatment but if you cannot avoid it, make sure that you are generous with your sunscreen application.
- Avoid Heavy Workouts
Avoid heavy cardio exercises that can increase your heart rate for a prolonged time for at least 3-4 days after the treatment. The increased blood circulation can cause pain in the treated area and also induce bruising.
- Avoid Taking Blood Thinning Products
Avoid eating foods that can have a blood-thinning effect on your body. It is also best to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for 2 days after the treatment. These precautions reduce the chance of bruising of the skin in the treated area.
- Avoid Eyewear in the Treated area
If you have got the fillers in the upper half of your face or your nose, then wearing eyewear can put pressure on the treated area. For optimal results, it would help to avoid wearing eyewear that puts pressure on the treated area for at least a week following the treatment.
